Antique (c. 1850) Exquisite Point de Gauze/Point de Angleterre Lace Large Cream Shawl with Provenance
Exquisite large combination Pt de Gauze and Pt d' Angleterre hand lace wedding shawl dating to the mid 19th century. These large shawls in these fine laces are extremely rare and may have taken up to 10 women many months to complete; these were commissioned pieces made only for the very wealthy. The rich decoration and drawing illustrates the determination of the artists of the time to display the virtuosity of their expertise and aesthetics to the fullest.
This was worn in 1911 by Miss Helen Roosevelt Lincoln on her wedding day in Wareham, Mass. Was left to her by her great aunt and namesake Mrs. Helen Schell of New York City. Gorgeous museum worthy, fine hand work beautifully executed and drawn with central floral medallion, and lavish floral designs throughout. Sold as is uncleaned, with 15-18 pindot to slightly larger holes, some with rust marks around them.
